So right after the Spring/Summer 2006 catalog for Soho Press arrived in my mailbox, the Fall 06 catalog appeared. More coolness on the horizon, here's the rundown of what I liked:
Billy Boyle: A World War II Mystery by James Benn. Billy is an Irish cop who has jsut made detective enlists and ends up with a job on the staff of a distant cousin: Dwight Eisenhower. He makes Billy his special investigator and sends him off to look for a spy among the Norwegians who might thwart the upcoming invasion of Norway. I love the combination of war and detecting here and Billy sounds like an interesting hero.
African Visas by Maria Thomas. To celebrate their 20th anniversary Soho is reissuing three classic works by Thomas who died in a plane crash in Ethiopia in 1989 while accompanying a Texas Congressman on a mission to a refugee camp. While all three books sound great, Visas includes a first person account of a American woman's life in the Peace Corps that I'm particularly drawn to.
Cara Black has a new Aimee Leduc mystery: Murder on the Ile Saint-Louis. It involves a baby with a missing mother, two murders and a discovery in the sewers beneath the Seine. I love Aimee Leduc, and another entry in this series is always cause for celebration.
Soho Crime also has a book from a debut author, Chinatown Beat by Henry Chang. Chang grew up in Chinatown and his book follows police detective Jack Yu who is investigating a serial rapist preying on young Chinese girls.
I'm hoping to start integrating some Soho Press titles into my repertoire over at Bookslut - it's a great publisher and I'm really impressed by their unique titles.
