The Tricycle Press catalog arrived on Friday with several fun looking children's books. Here's a few standouts:

Courage of the Blue Boy by Robert Neubecker - This is a picture book about "the blue boy's quest for color." He travels through lands of all different colors and then comes to a city where all the colors live in harmony except for blue. The boy comes up with an idea for adding blue to the town, a courageous decision to share his color with the world.

It looks beautiful - Neubecker is an artist who has had his work displayed in many different publications. I like the multi racial idea here that is not a complete hit over the head for readers. And the text excerpts in the catalog look good. Should be fun.

Time Bomb by Nigel Hinton. Set in post-WW2 Britain, four eleven year old boys find leftover ordinance and keep it a secret because they have been betrayed by the adults in their lives. "Hinton's story will hook readers from page one and ignite discussions about right and wrong, prejudice and consequence, life and death."

I've never heard of anything like this one - looking forward to it.

Hugging the Rock by Susan Taylor Brown. Susan actually emailed me to see if I was interested in reviewing her book (which is how I ended up with the catalog!). When Mom runs away from home Rachel stays behind with an emotionally distant father and a lot of questions. Written in verse, this is the story of how she and her father "the rock" form a relationship. From what I've seen of it, it is very honest and heartfelt. My plan is to review it this Fall in a collection of other books about family discord at Eclectica.

(Love the cover too!)

Fans of cooking with kids should take a look at the publisher's page for food - several very good cookbooks listed both for younger cooks and teenagers. It's a great selection and if you are needing these kinds of titles, you will have hit the motherload here.
