There's been some discussion lately about the lack of review attention for nonfiction titles for kids and YAs. I am apparently ahead of a trend here (shocking!) as my feature on titles for curious minds just went up at Bookslut with a discussion of ten - count 'em TEN! - excellent new nonfiction titles for the younger set. I've got everything from dinosaurs and animals to art and writing over there and the age range is huge. Do check it out.

My new column is also up and built around a broad "Cabinet of Wonders" theme. It's mostly fiction recommendations (although my Cool Reads are both nonfic) and includes some crossover titles as well as cool teen fiction (Matt Ruff! Sherman Alexie! Molly Gloss! Tanith Lee! Justin Richards! Kirsten Miller!) If you're still looking for that perfect book for a middle grade reader or teen, I've got awesome choices to consider.

And don't forget Bildungsroman where author recommendations of good reads from 2007 have begun. Today is Christopher Golden's list of what he loved. I really need to get that James Lee Burke title.....

Thanks for the nonfiction recommendations, Colleen! I'm vaguely interested in writing an MG/YA nonfiction title on an art/art history theme, but I don't know much about what's out there and what makes a good YA non-fiction book. This really helps!

Jan Marks' Museum Book is amazing - although equal credit must go to her illustrator. There are some good art/art history books for kids but also a ton of bad ones and I wish more people would write about artists in a way that kids could relate to.

I love good nonfiction - it's actually the theme for my January column as well (although those books are all skewed for older teen readers).
