A bunch of us have been talking about doing another One Shot and decided to go way outside our reading comfort zones this time with Southeast Asia. For those of you not familiar with the One Shot idea, a group of bloggers (and its open to everybody with a blog) all agree to read a book by an author from a certain region or a book set in that region and then blog about it on a specified day. You can also interview an author from there if you prefer. To make it easy for readers to follow the project, everyone emails their exact url to me and I post a master list with links and quotes on the One Shot day. In the end we manage to hopefully discover new authors, new books, and a little bit different perspective then we receive from reading primarily American works.

For the purposes of this project, here are the countries we have settled on to comprise Southeast Asia:

Thailand
Laos
Cambodia
Vietnam
Singapore
Malaysia
Indonesia
Philippines

The date is August 12th which should give everyone plenty of time to find and read a book. Keep in mind that the books can be any genre, any age, fiction or nonfiction. This is as wide open as it gets. And don't worry if multiple people end up writing about the same book - that just gives everyone more opinions to consider!

I hope lots of folks join in - and will repost on this again next month as a reminder.

Sounds great! I may be joining since I already have a book in mind and on my reading queue.

I'm in! I'm in! I am so glad you guys decided on Southeast Asia. Guess which Southeast country I will focus on? Hahahaha! :D

*Southeast Asian country

HA - can't wait to see what you write about Tarie. My brother was stationed in the Philippines a million years ago (he is a former Marine)...I still have a lovely pair of jade earrings he bought me. He really enjoyed life there. (The next stop was Korea and that was just COLD!)

I'm in!

Sounds good, Colleen! Can't wait to see the recommendations.

I'm in! I picked up a book from BEA that is set in Thailand and this will be perfect! My husband lived there for a bit. How I wish I could take a vacation over there.

Hey Colleen, this is faulous. Can we use authors who are immigrants to the US? I am thinking of Andrew Pham -- from Vietnam, came as a boat person when he was a kid, just before the fall. I just got a recent book of his (and loved his first book "Catfish Mandala" about returning to Vietnam and bicycling from the South to Hanoi.

Oh sure Midori - I think that would be fine. (I'm sure there will be expat American writers who now live in SE Asia that will be covered and that is sort of the same thing in reverse.)

Sounds great - I'm in! I can't wait to see the other reviews - it's such a great way to get kids to relate to other parts of the world.

I'm in, Colleen. You just so happened to pick the region of the world where I now live, and where several books I've just read are set. Thanks for making it easy on me! :)

This is a fantastic idea, and I'm going to try to rustle something up. I've been trying to track down Mochtar Lubis's TWILIGHT IN JAKARTA for some time, but perhaps this will be just the kick in the pants to locate this (or another title).

I've never done anything like this before. This will be an interesting adventure.

I'm so glad all of you are in and yes Jason - I thought of you when SE Asia was decided!

I'm in...I love all these new experiences!

I know I'm late commenting but I'd love to join in. My brothers and I have jsut started a blog for reviewing teen books. I've been looking around for a Southeast Asia YA book and could use some help from anyone willing to offer suggestions. I'm 18 and love urban fantasy but any good story you recommend would help!

Kudos to you and the rest of the organizers for thinking of this tour. PaperTigers is looking forward to joining in on the fun!

Hi! I'm from Manila, Philippines. I would like to join the One Shot project. I can do a review of a book or books of our local writers.

May I write about this project in my blog so more people in my home country can join?

Best,

Zarah

Sure Zarah! Spread it far and wide!
