Because this is a week that we will never forget, with pictures we will never forget and stories we will never forget, there is a moment needed to take a deep breath. History changes this week and as catastrophic as the earthquake is proving to be, I believe that Haiti will continue to turn a corner that has been long overdue. It wouldn't hurt if France ponied up a hell of a lot more money because god knows, they should. (Do you know the financial history between France and Haiti? Do read this quick piece at the Daily Beast to give you an idea. Then consider what would have happened to the US if the British had done this to us.)

So, because of so much sorrow here is a little bit of joy: Sam Cooke singing "Blowin' in the Wind" like no one else. Love him and adore this.

PS. Am I the only one who thought it was interesting that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie donated the same amount of money as Bank of America to quake relief? (It was 1 million dollars.) Boy, BOA wouldn't want to dip into those bonus funds, would they?

Colleen, this was another link I saw that I thought sounded like a very good idea:

On unrelated note, I really like the notion that you are combining those 2 Alaska books - I know it is such a slog doing these major rewrites, but it really does have the sound to me of the thing that is going to tip it over the edge from "great but noncommercial" into "great and sellable"!

Thanks for the link Jenny - and nice to see that it went through today! Having grown up in FL it was always a bone of contention that Haitians were detained and deported with awesome regularity while Cubans seemed to enjoy more political power and ability to fight to stay. I would assume this had something to do with "sticking it to Castro" but really I have no idea. The Haitians in the US certainly deserve TPS now though.

And thanks for the words on the book = really needed them right now!

Thanks for that link. Thanks for the joy. Did you happen to read Dream Boogie?

Oh, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. You know, I'd really like to dislike those people, but I just can't.

(comment challenge visit, though I've checked out your blog many a time, often at the suggestion of Sara Lewis Holmes)

I hope you're right, Colleen, about Haiti being able to come out of this with strength and dignity and turn a critical corner with their national well-being. And, I noticed, too, that Brad and Angelina gave the same amt. as B of A and some others. It sort of made me go "errrr???"

I like the Daily Beast. That's where I ended up going for ideas for donations for quake relief besides the standard Red Cross. (I ended up going with Doctors Without Borders.)

Hey, Colleen--I was *just* wondering where I could find facts and figures on the money France extorted from Haiti...so thanks very much for that link. With Pat Robertson and Rush making endless, idiotic remarks, Americans NEED to dig for the truth...

I donated to Doctors Without Borders also - regardless of whether the money goes to Haiti or not this time, they are an awesome organization.

Zetta: The history of Haiti is pretty unbelievable but I was happy to see Italy wiped the Haitian debt today which is awesome. So much of the $ they owe other countries and banks is such crap it's not even funny. You have a dictator who was propped up by foreign governments and they rob the people blind and get deposed (or die) but the country is permanently crippled by the leftover debt.

It's wrong, and everybody knows it.
