I had an epiphany the other night while rewatching Season 4 of The Gilmore Girls and going through the piles of paper that have been threatening to turn me into a potential mini-hoarder. (GG is perfect for this - just the right balance of drama and comedy to keep you going while shoving stuff into the recycle bin.) Anyway, my epiphany is that someone needs to create a blog that highlights the clothes, books and music from the Gilmore Girls. Initially I thought they should write a book (a wonderfully illustrated book) but since the show has been off the air for awhile I'm sure publishers would be wary of supporting it so first you need the blog to prove the idea's worthiness, then the book deal would follow.

Obviously I've been thinking about this a lot.

Seriously though, someone needs to do this. They could do it as a master's thesis (on pop culture influences or something impressive-sounding like that) and create the blog as an offshoot of it. You could call it research - professors would love it and all its massive social media potential.

The trick is to make it real, not just a fanzine (not that there's anything wrong with that). You show what a character is wearing and if it's something really fabulous then you track down the designer or stylist who picked it out or look at the history of that kind of outfit (argyle sweaters, leather jackets, trucker hats) and what the outfit is thus supposed to convey. You write about the books and then the people behind those books - the author, the subject, what critics said about it, what it meant that one of the characters was reading that book. And the music! You could go crazy over the symbolism of the music choices from Lane to Lorelai to Richard Gilmore and his vinyl collection. Oh and the movies - the movies mentioned in the series will keep you going for months.

I swear if I think too long about this I'm going to chuck all of my future writing plans and immerse myself in Gilmore Girls trivia and make the site myself. (No, I'm not really going to but I could and it would be ridiculously fun.) In a perfect world this website (and book) would already exist and I could be pouring over it right now. Really. Someone needs to get on it so I can be even more of a Gilmore geek than I already am.

Please.

Yay, another GG fan! Love this idea. I once posted about GG food:

Also, have you read THE GILMORE GIRLS COMPANION? Came out last Fall I think.

*sigh* I miss Emily Gilmore so bad...

This is the best idea. Didn't the DVDs come with some sort of booklet explaining some of the pop cultural references? If only I had some free time, I would totally do this...

Totally need to check out the companion book, Jama - thanks!

And yes, Whitney, the dvds do have booklets with tons of explanations for all the pop culture refs. It would make the blog soooo much easier to construct.

I swear, this is the coolest book ever in the making.

This. Is. Brilliant.

I really want this blog to exist. I want this blog to exist so badly, I'm tempted to go back to grad school for a master's in pop culture studies just so I can help make this happen. Racking up $50 grand in student loans to justify creating this blog would be a totally rational and sane thing to do, right?
